About this site

Jeff Phelps has been active in the original music scene since the mid-1980's, starting with the self-produced album, "Magnetic Eyes", in 1985. Recorded entirely on one of the first Tascam Portastudio 244's, and without the use of the then-fledgling MIDI protocol, Jeff had only 4 cassette tracks to work with. Taking advantage of the Portastudio's track bouncing capability, he layered and combined multiple tracks to record all the parts himself (keyboards, sax, flute, drum machine and vocals). More details are provided on the "Magnetic Eyes" page on this site.

The unexpected interest in this album more than 20 years later inspired the development of this site to preserve the music digitally, provide some background on the project's history and development, and answer questions that arise regarding Jeff's musical path since those days just before digital recording and MIDI became a way of life. Links are provided to projects that he has been associated with over the years, as well as those currently in production.
